Description of Roles

We’re looking for over 50 enthusiastic trail running volunteers who are keen to provide awesomely marked routes to our runners and help make sure no one gets lost!

There are two key roles within the Routes Team, both of which are suited to competent trail runners with previous race experience, who are able to navigate and remain self-sufficient in mountainous environments for extended durations, in all weather and during darkness.

Waymarking: This involves placing and collecting route waymarking materials so the runners can easily follow the route. Working in pairs, you'll follow a detailed set of instructions and schedule to ensure one segment of the route is accurately waymarked as late as possible, but before the first runner is due to arrive.

You’ll then you’ll be located at a nearby aid station ‘on standby’ to assist with feeding/watering the runners, as well as tending to any waymarking amendments that may be necessary once the races are live. Finally, once the Sweepers (see below) have passed, it's time to diligently collect all waymarking materials ASAP, ensuring the event leaves to trace upon the beauty of Eryri!

Sweeping: Working in pairs, this involves walking/running a segment of the race route with the very last runner, to ensure all runners are accounted for upon arrival at each aid station. Frequent radio communication with Race Control, nearby Aid Station Captains and Mountain Safety Teams will be necessary throughout.

The Route Team is managed by Route & Safety Manager Kev Keenan. A long-standing UTS Senior Event Team member, for any queries regarding these roles, please email him via kev.keenan@utmb.world
